"Think Glass"
April 7, 2015
We recently asked Michael Janis and Erwin Timmers of Washington Glass School their thoughts around Open Studio Tour and here is what they had to share:
Michael Janis
What do you like most about the Open Studio Tour (OST)?
I love to see all the people - seeing old friends and meeting new ones. It is one of the few times in a year that all the artists and instructors of the Washington Glass School come together in one place to show what amazing artworks they have been making for the past few months.
What do you like about the Gateway Arts District?
The concentration of artists of the highest caliber is incredible. Museum curators, national magazine editors and collectors have all been blown away by the talent concentration.
Is there anything unique to you about this area?
Closeness to downtown Washington, DC - So much is available being so close the the Nation's Capitol.
For visitors coming to OST 2015, what are your recommendations?
Think Glass.
Any fond memories - recollections about OST that is turning 11 this year?
The memories have blurred into a warm and fuzzy recollection of a fun moving party where great artwork is out to be viewed and bought.Often many of the area's collectors mark their calendars to see if they can score work by an established or up-and-coming artists during the Open Studio Tours.
Erwin Timmers
What do you like most about the Open Studio Tour (OST)?
It’s really nice to take a breather from working on projects, and get it ready for public viewing. We even sweep the studio for the event! It gives me a nice overview of where I am, and I sneak out and get to see all the awesome work around me.
What do you like about the Gateway Arts District (GAD)?
The GAD has been so supportive as an organized way to foster the arts, and it has brought an immense number of accomplished artists to the region. It is indispensible to be surrounded by so much artistic talent.
Is there anything unique to you about this area?
The sheer number of artists that live and work nearby is very unique.
For visitors coming to OST 2015 what are your recommendations?
Don’t try to see everything, there’s too much. Buy something from an artist you like, this is your chance to buy directly from the source!
Any fond memories - recollections about OST that is turning 11 this year?
It always a fun event! A great excuse for meeting new people, and seeing old friends.
