"I would tell my younger self to whistle while you work..."

April 22, 2016

Meet Alonzo Davis, an artist who uses paint, bamboo, copper, leather, indigenous textiles and mixed media to reflect the magic of the Southwest United States, Brazil, Haiti, West Africa and the Pacific Rim in his works. Learn how he discovered his art.

How did you discover the medium you currently work in?

I discovered my current medium while working at the Virginia Center For The Arts I found a clump of bamboo and started combining it with paintings in progress.

How did you discover the Gateway Arts District?

I discovered the Gateway Arts District after five years of looking around for a group of studios with professional artists.

If you could give your younger self a piece of advice about being an artist, what would it be?

I would tell my younger self to whistle while you work.

What drives you?

The next piece is inspired by the last piece.

What is your greatest challenge as an artist?

The market place is my greatest challenge.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on a series of large collage paintings with bamboo.
